During National Volunteer Week, we’re proud to highlight some of the incredible individuals who give their time, energy, and heart to help us keep families close. Today, we’re spotlighting Doug Long, a dedicated volunteer at our Peoria House whose story reminds us of the power of simply showing up with compassion.
Doug first connected with RMHCCI after seeing a social media post calling for volunteers. With a strong desire to support children in need, he reached out and scheduled a tour of the Peoria House.
“I was just so impressed with not only the building, but also the people and the mission,” Doug shared. “I signed up right away!”
Since then, Doug has become a regular face around the House — always ready to lend a hand wherever it’s needed. From making sure the kitchen is clean and welcoming, to tackling hands-on projects like installing shelves in support areas, Doug’s willingness to jump in has made a lasting impact.
“There’s always something to do that can benefit the children and their families,” he says. “And I love knowing I’m helping create a safe and comfortable environment during a tough time in their lives.”
But Doug’s favorite part? The kids. Whether it’s a wave, a smile, or sharing a quick moment of joy, it’s the interactions with families that stick with him most.
“My favorite memory so far is playing tag on the playground with two brothers. I said I could play one game… they asked for five… and we compromised on three!”
His advice for anyone considering volunteering?
“Do it! RMHCCI has a heart for these kids and families. If you plug into this mission, you’re helping to make their stay more relaxed, safe, and supported at a time when they really need it. Plus, the staff are so encouraging and appreciative — it’s a truly rewarding experience.”
Thank you, Doug, for your time, dedication, and the heart you bring to the House. Volunteers like you are the reason RMHCCI can continue to provide comfort and care to families when it matters most.
