Volunteer Spotlight: Dave’s Story Comes Full Circle

4/23/2025 Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois

For Dave, volunteering with Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois isn’t just about giving back — it’s about honoring a chapter of his own family’s journey and bringing comfort to others walking similar paths.

“We stayed at a Ronald McDonald House in Cleveland about 20 years ago,” Dave shared. “It was a haven for families of sick children. I always thought that someday I might have something to do with the organization.”

Now, Dave volunteers at the Peoria House, where he finds purpose in supporting families through both big and small moments.

“My favorite part of volunteering is being able to help out with the cause that RMHC represents,” he said. “Almost every time I’m here, I connect with other families. We share stories, and it reminds me how important this place really is.”

One of the most special ways Dave gives back is through something deeply personal: red journals. Inspired by a journal he and his wife found in their room at the Cleveland House, Dave donates journals to RMHCCI — hoping families will write in them, just like he once did.

“Reading those stories helped us feel like we weren’t alone during our son’s health battle,” he explained. “I hope these journals give others the same comfort — that they aren’t in this battle alone either.”

When asked what he would tell others considering volunteering, Dave’s message is simple and sincere:

“Do it. Whether it’s your time or a donation of items like food or household goods — there is always a need, and it all matters.”

He adds one final thought from the heart:

“I hope parents and families staying at the House pray for endurance in the road ahead — because they will probably need that more than anything.”

Thank you, Dave, for turning your family’s experience into a legacy of kindness, empathy, and hope.
