Watch Ronan’s Story

Ronan was a prankster with a deep love for life and an even deeper love for his family. His sense of humor and endless energy brought joy to everyone around him. Whether he was teasing his sister—always with a twinkle in his eye—or dreaming of his future as a farmer, Ronan embodied the vibrant, hopeful spirit of childhood. He loved boating, farming, and the simple pleasures of being outdoors, always looking ahead to a bright future.

But on August 30, 2022, everything changed. A day after returning from a family trip to Lake of the Ozarks, Ronan showed his parents some strange bruises on his hips. What began as a routine trip to express care quickly escalated to a leukemia diagnosis. Within hours, Ronan and his family were going to Peoria for treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Their journey would test their resilience and bring them to a place they never expected to need: Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois became more than a place to stay for Ronan’s family—it became a second home. It was here that Ronan found stability amid the chaos. He always stayed in the same room, his room, which brought him comfort and familiarity. The fully equipped kitchen allowed his mom to cook his favorite meals—essential for a boy who was both a big eater and a picky one. Even in the cold of February, the team members would bring out the grill so Ronan could enjoy a steak just as he liked it.

As Tammy, Ronan’s mom, shared, “The team members at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois went above and beyond to make us feel supported. From the security guard greeting them with coffee at midnight to the personalized kindness of the team, the warmth they provided was immeasurable. When Ronan couldn’t attend his high school homecoming with his girlfriend Taylor, the team members helped organize a private celebration. Together, they created a magical evening with photos at the castle in Peoria Heights and a small gathering in the garden. It was a moment of normalcy in an extraordinary time.”

Ronan passed away on March 25, 2023. His loss was a heartbreaking moment for everyone who knew him. His family’s love and dedication to his memory have remained steadfast.

Even after Ronan’s passing, his family continues to honor his memory. On what would have been his 21st birthday, they returned to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois to cook his favorite meal: chicken fettuccine Alfredo, garlic bread, salad, and cheesy peas—a dish invented just for him. Their act of love was a way to give back and celebrate the legacy of a boy whose life, though short, touched so many.

Through it all, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois stood by their side. The love and care they received—both for Ronan and themselves—offered hope in their darkest days. As his family says, “It takes a special person to work here, and the love you give to each family is spectacular.”

Ronan’s story is one of resilience, love, and community. Though he is deeply missed, his legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and all who were lucky enough to know him. His family’s strength and the support of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois are a testament to the power of coming together during life’s most challenging moments.
