This National Volunteer Week, we are honored to highlight two inspiring women who give their time and talents to support families at our Springfield House — Carol and Lindsay, a mother-daughter team making a meaningful difference every time they walk through our doors.

Lindsay’s involvement with Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Illinois began through her college sorority’s national partnership. That early connection sparked a passion that continues today — not only as a volunteer, but also as a dedicated member of our Board of Directors.

“My sorority has partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities® for 45 years,” Lindsay shared. “When I moved to Springfield and had the opportunity to volunteer with RMHCCI, I took that chance.”

Her mother, Carol, had been looking for a place to serve, and after learning about Lindsay’s experience, decided to join her in volunteering. “I was looking for a place to volunteer,” Carol said. “And I knew of RMHCCI from Lindsay’s philanthropy with her sorority.”

Now, this duo helps assemble welcome bags filled with essentials and comforts of home to ease the burden for families with a hospitalized child. “Knowing that I can bring comfort to families with something as simple as a welcome bag is incredibly fulfilling,” Carol said.

For Lindsay, the mission runs deep. “Knowing that I can provide families a sense of home when their child is ill — that’s what keeps me coming back. The gratitude they show is so rewarding. Everyone is so appreciative to have a place where they can focus on their child and not worry about where they are sleeping.”

Carol and Lindsay have formed great connections with RMHCCI staff and are excited to continue giving back — their next goal is to cook a meal for families at the Springfield House.

When asked what they would say to someone thinking about volunteering, their answer was unanimous: go for it.

“No matter how little or much time you have, it is a wonderful way to give back to the community,” said Carol.

“Absolutely do it,” Lindsay added. “The gratitude of the families is everything.”
